Directed by filmmaker Phil Bertelsen, Beyond the Steps follows the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (AAADT) during a pivotal period in its history, when the company ventured abroad and established new roots at home. The documentary marks a moment of both growth and reflection: the troupe travels to Russia after an absence of 15 years; moves into a state-of-the-art custom facility; and creates a new ballet entitled “Love Stories,” choreographed by longtime AAADT Artistic Director Judith Jamison in collaboration with hip-hop pioneer Rennie Harris and modern dance maverick Robert Battle. Under Jamison’s steadfast leadership, the making of a new dance and a new home serve as symbols of the remarkable foundation that Ailey built and of the vibrancy that defines the company today. Beyond the Steps will premiere on PBS’ Great Performances in June 2006.
When the Road Bends… Tales of a Gypsy Caravan
Shot on 16 mm film and PAL digital video, this documentary film features the sounds of flamenco, brass band, Romanian violin, Indian folk, raga and jazz. Filmmaker Jasmine Dellal also traveled with these remarkable Roma musicians to their homes in Romania, Macedonia, Spain and India. Funded by the Independent Television Service. When the Road Bends… premiered at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival.
Flying: Confessions of a Free Woman
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jennifer Fox, Flying… is a journey to define what it means to be a woman in today’s complicated world. It will explore the changing roles of women and men on individual and society-wide levels, resulting in an experimental drama about the collective search to make sense of being female. By involving other women in the conversation, Flying… will create a framework of shared experiences of womanhood across cultures and generations. The film has been picked up by HBO, BBC, ARTE France/Germany, and 7 other stations around the world. Big Mouth Films is serving as a Consulting Producer on this film.
